Budget Rent-A-Car Site Contamination Remediation
Cendant Car Rental Group, Inc. | Grand Rapids, Michigan | 1994 - Ongoing

Budget Rent-A-Car Site Contamination RemediationBCI staff was retained to define and remediate a release from an underground storage tank (UST), which was discovered and reported in March 1994 when gasoline was observed on the water in a drainage ditch adjacent to the site property boundary. When examined, the on-site storm sewer catch basins also contained free product. The portion of the UST system believed to be the source of the release was the underground product piping. An Initial Assessment Report was submitted on behalf of Budget Rent-A-Car to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment (MDNRE). The UST piping and pump dispenser were removed and a new UST system installed.

During site assessment activities to delineate the extent of residual soil contamination, free product was discovered in the groundwater at an approximate depth of 20 feet below the ground surface. Monitoring wells were installed to delineate the extent of groundwater impacted above applicable cleanup criteria, and soil borings were advanced to delineate the residual soil impacts. A total fluids pump and treat system was designed and installed on the property in order to recover impacted groundwater and free product, remediate the groundwater, and control the migration of the contaminant plume. More than 7.5 million gallons of impacted groundwater were recovered and treated at the site. Site closure was approved by the MDNRE in January 2008.
