Scope
-
Slope Stability Assessment:
BCI completed standard penetration test (SPT) borings and sampling of a gypsum stack slope that was moving. We installed slope indicator instrumentation and provided recommendations to improve slope stability.
-
Gypsum Stack Seepage & Stability Assessment:
BCI provided emergency response to evaluate the cause of gypsum stack instability, completed test borings in gypsum and foundation materials, reviewed historical information and plans, and prepared design drawings and specifications for owner to install acid water seepage collection system to allow for continued gypsum disposal.
-
Gypsum Stack Engineering:
After converting an existing cooling pond to a gypsum stack, seepage occurred between the interface of old liner and overlaying gypsum dam materials, causing slope failures. BCI performed a site assessment; prepared outline of short and long term recommendations; installed drain system to control seepage pipes and inhibit slope failure; and managed to design and install without plant shutdown.
BCI continues to serve as the gypsum stack engineers for this facility.
