South Florida Water Management District’s (SFWMD) Loxahatchee Reservoir is a critical component of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP), and is one of the first public/private projects initiated. This 1,000-acre water storage area was created in a former limerock mining area providing 44,500-acre feet of storage. BCI was retained by Palm Beach Aggregates to provide comprehensive design support and serve as the engineer of record.
BCI provided the following services:
- Coordinated activities with SFWMD & U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)
- Investigated existing dams & determined extent of remedial work necessary
- Evaluated seepage conditions to establish critical slope stability
- Evaluated wind & wave run-up conditions & adequate slope protection
- Prepared construction plans & specifications for each of the seven reservoir cells
- Designed & monitored the construction of more than three miles of roller compacted concrete (RCC) slope armoring
- Designed & monitored the construction of a 73-foot deep, three-mile long bentonite seepage barrier
- Set up record keeping & reporting for all field operations
- Trained inspectors & testing technicians as necessary
- Evaluated borrow materials for suitability in dam construction & established specifications
- Provided quality assurance inspections on a regular schedule
- Designed & monitored the hydraulic dredging of approximately 35 million cubic yards of material
