BCI’s Geotechnical Engineering & Mining Services Team specializes in the design, inspection and remediation of dams, reservoirs and water control structures. As home to one of the nation’s most renowned earth dam experts, we are frequently called upon to assess dam integrity. Our team has a broad understanding of all the relevant factors and issues that govern practical dam and reservoir design, construction and rehabilitation.
Our geotechnical engineering professionals are experts at designing and monitoring soil improvement programs requiring extensive knowledge of local soil, rock and groundwater conditions. Our services range from compaction grouting to deep dynamic compaction. We often work closely with our water resources and restoration group to tackle marginal soils existing near lakes, ponds, wetlands, streams, canals, and other waterways. Our dredging projects range from sediment sampling, testing, and characterization to disposal site selection, volume estimates, berm design and erosion control.
The team has extensive experience in the design of slurry walls, gyp stacks and settling ponds, as well as slope stability, seepage, and settlement analysis. In addition, we provide services such as shallow foundation design and pavement analysis for structures, roadways and housing developments. Designing bridge pile foundations and abutments, sheet pile walls and seawalls is also a team talent.
BCI provides a wide range of services to support all phases of a project from preliminary design through completion of the construction process. We focus on project objectives and use innovative technologies to provide practical, cost-effective design and monitoring in the following areas:
- Dam & Embankment Design
- Dam Inspections
- Foundation Analysis & Design
- Slope Stability & Seepage Analysis
- Soil Stabilization & Ground Improvement
|
- On-site Construction Inspection Services
- Soils & Materials Testing
- Dredging & Sediment Removal Design
- Gyp Stack & Slurry Wall Design

To suppliment our comprehensive range of geotechnical services, our staff maintains a materials testing laboratory, which is validated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to perform a range of testing including soil classification, compaction, permeability, concrete strength, and asphalt density. Materials testing personnel are available to provide for all of your on-site testing and inspection needs. Our field technicians maintain Nuclear Gauge Radiation Safety and American Concrete Institute (ACI) concrete testing certificates.
BCI's Geotechnical Engineering Team looks forward to safeguarding your past and future projects!

Mining Services
Many of the properties being purchased by land developers and covered with housing hold a secret: they are potential aggregate and mineral mining locations. Keeping this in mind, according to the Florida Limerock & Aggregate Institute (FLAI), construction in the state of Florida alone requires 165 million tons of aggregate per year and 41 million tons of concrete and mason sand. Problem anyone…?
At BCI Engineers & Scientist, Inc. we’ve already incorporated aggregate mining into our repertoire. We want to stay abreast of the mining industry for our clients, so we’ve aligned ourselves with the FLAI and its research project which seeks to investigate the locations of potential aggregate mining sites to spur involvement and investment in the aggregate mining industry.
BCI began in the mining industry more than 30 years ago researching phosphatic mineral reserves, the performance of clay settling areas, and completing mine reclamations. BCI’s Mining & Land Reclamation Team is now a skilled staff of engineers, scientists and technicians specializing in geology, mining engineering, biology, chemistry, and environmental sciences. From initial planning and permitting design to closure and reclamation, our experts have the skills to facilitate your mining projects in the following areas:
BCI staff maintains Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as well as Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Hazardous Waste Operation and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certifications. BCI has applied its mining expertise to a variety of projects around the globe, from the Singrauli coal mining region in central India to the alumina red mud ponds and bauxite dams of Brazil, Jamaica and St. Croix (USVI).
Today’s permitting process is tedious at best, but our team gets it done. During a sand mine development project in Florida’s Green Swamp, BCI prepared a controversial 400-year Life-of-Mine Environmental Resource Permit that was fully approved by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP).
Our clientele includes Florida Crushed Stone (Rinker Materials), Plaza Materials Co., and E.R. Jahna, and Fortune 500 companies such as ExxonMobil, Alcoa, and The Mosaic Company. Our Fortune 500 clients reap the rewards of BCI’s world-wide mining exposure, renowned professional affiliations, and our unmatched responsiveness – so can you!
