Scope
What is Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)?
GPR is a non-destructive geophysical survey method that uses radio waves (radar) to evaluate and map the subsurface. For most applications, GPR is operated in reflection mode and is used to produce a radar image of the subsurface. Given many recent improvements in equipment design, GPR is being applied to a wide variety of situations including mapping shallow soils and geology; locating buried metallic and non-metallic objects including tanks, drums, and pipes; water table mapping; and other geotechnical and environmental applications.
How does BCI use GPR?
BCI owns and operates a state-of-the-art Noggin Plus/SmartCart Digital GPR Profiling System (500 & 250MHz). We use our GPR system as a rapid site assessment tool to evaluate subsurface geology and to locate underground storage tanks and pipes. The system is routinely utilized in subsidence investigations of residential and commercial properties to evaluate for potential karst and sinkhole activity, to map soil stratigraphy, and to identify buried debris and underground utilities. The digital GPR unit in combination with the SmartCart System is highly portable and is run by a single operator, allowing BCI to provided quick, highly accurate, and cost-effective site surveys.
