Scope
Exxon Mobil Corporation retained BCI in September 1996 to manage the 11,000 acre Ft. Meade Mine, where mining operations stopped in 1993. BCI was responsible for environmental compliance and management of the mandatory reclamation activities. Our contract included completing daily inspections of critical surface water management structures, collecting weekly composite water samples at discharge points, and conducting weekly dam inspections.
Reclamation management includes reclamation design as well as directing dewatering, earth moving and re-vegetation contractors. BCI performed reclamation of two clay settling areas, dredging clay from the bottom of the primary Conservation Ditch, stabilizing the side slopes and constructing numerous armored open conveyance features and outfall control structures.
BCI staff also coordinated with FDEP Bureau of Mine Reclamation personnel, monitored dredge and fill permit compliance, and supervised completion of several special projects. Reclamation activities included designing a wetland restoration project to satisfy the dredge and fill permit conditions for a dragline crossing site across the Peace River. This sensitive work was completed in the floodplain and required close coordination between the contractor, BCI and the FDEP staff.
