BCI was charged with the task of evaluating hydrogeologic data collected by others, the development and organization of a groundwater quality database and a reinterpretation of the site's hydrogeologic setting.  Based on these evaluations, BCI prepared and submitted a site Hydrogeologic Monitoring Plan (HGMP) to the MDEQ on Richfield Landfill, Inc.'s behalf. This plan focused on groundwater monitoring of three aquifers underlying the landfill. 

In 2001, BCI completed a  site assessment and initial abatement activities to address the release of "free product" unleaded gasoline into the environment. Due to the initial emergency nature of this work, interaction with federal, state, and local units of government in response to the product release was essential.

BCI responded to a diesel fuel spill into Lake Erie to complete initial abatement activities. The release was the result of a leaking product distribution line associated with a diesel fuel underground storage tank system located at a gas station in Luna Pier, Michigan. The product entered the stormwater catch basins on the property and entered the municipal stormwater main and ultimately the wastewater treatment plant. Lake Erie is a navigable waterway of the United States and, as such, is under the jurisdiction of the United States Coast Guard (USCG).

A planned unit development required a groundwater discharge site for 300,000 gallons per day. BCI completed an evaluation of multiple locations in search of a suitable site. Detailed hydrogeological investigation and permitting and aquifer testing for the development of a rapid-rate infiltration discharge area were performed and a permit submitted to the MDEQ. The site was permitted by the MDEQ. 

This project involved the evaluation of multiple locations in search of two 1.5 million-gallon-per-day discharge sites. BCI completed a detailed hydrogeological investigation, permitting and aquifer test for the development of two rapid rate infiltration discharge areas.

BCI completed a remedial investigation, feasibility study and remedial action plan of an abandoned dump site identified as the Bray Road Dump located within the Genesee County Recreation Area.  This work has been performed for the Genesee Parks and Recreation   Department and the Genesee County Board of Commissioners.  The objective is to provide Genesee County with information pertaining to the determination of whether hazardous substances arepresent on the site and, if present, whether concentrations exceed current MDEQ risk-based standards.

BCI staff have been performing routine environmental monitoring services for the Ann Arbor Land Fill (AALF) since 1997.  During this time, various monitoring and remedial action improvements have been developed and implemented including: 1) abandonment of over 60 wells; 2) revision of the site hydrogeologic monitoring program;3) resolution of landfill leachate mercury monitoring issues; 4) installation of dedicated low flow sampling devices; 5) reduction of field sampling time by five days; 6) redesign of purge wells to eliminate prior screen plugging issues; 7) implementation of a purge well maintenance program; 8) redesign of Phase II area leachate discharge sump lines to eliminate breakage; 9) implementation of flow-through sample monitoring of groundwater samples; and 10) creation of a revised database management system and mass balance evaluations of purge waters.

The Tay-Ban Corporation (Tay-Ban), a subsidiary of Republic Waste Services, owns and operates a Type II sanitary landfill in Birch Run, Michigan. BCI has been   working on this project and assisting Tay-Ban for approximately 12 years.  Preparation and submittal of a revised site Hydrogeologic Monitoring Plan to the MDEQ was completed on Tay-Ban’s behalf. This revised plan focused on groundwater monitoring of the uppermost water bearing unit underlying the landfill. Eliminated from the prior plan were wells in a lower  water bearing unit and various chemical constituents which were deemed inappropriate for the site.  BCI staff successfully negotiated the implementation of this plan with the MDEQ.
