Scope
BCI was selected by the Southwest Florida Water Management District’s (SWFWMD) Surface Water Improvement and Management (SWIM) Department to design and permit various stormwater quality improvements within the Hunter Springs basin area. The Hunter Springs basin is located within the Kings Bay watershed, which is known to be a preferred winter home for the Florida Manatee. The basin is characterized by a large stormwater outfall that reports directly to the Kings Bay watershed. As such, water quality from this outfall is especially important, as it represents a significant inflow to the Bay. BCI developed conceptual and final design of various improvements where discharge was found to be below acceptable standards due to excessive sedimentation. The proposed improvements were distributed throughout the basin in four distinct retrofits. Improvements included modification to an existing Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) pond, creation of several stilling basins, and protection of slopes and scour-prone areas.
In addition to design and plans preparation, BCI was responsible for securing necessary permits from the SWFWMD, FDOT, and the City of Crystal River. Funding was secured from the SWIM program.
