Scope
BCI was contracted by the Lake County Board of County Commissioners to develop a Watershed Management Plan (WMP) for the Lake Griffin Basin. Lake Griffin is recognized as a high priority water body by the County as well as the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and the St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD).
As part of the WMP, BCI was tasked with developing a pollutant load model of the basin in an effort to define those areas that were contributing high levels of nutrients to the lake.
BCI minimized study steps and accomplished rapid drainage sub-basin prioritization based on pollutant loading. Outfalls were photographed and located by GPS units and pollutant loads were computed based on GIS land-use information and a Simple Method model.
Other BCI accomplishments included the implementation of efficient and cost-effective field reconnaissance to allow for adjustments in sub-basin drainage divide delineations, quantifications of probable runoff volume and quality, as well as intensity of land use and directly connected impervious area consideration; field truthing for adjustments in pollutant load estimates of priority sub-basins; development of conceptual water quality improvement projects for priority watersheds, which were then ranked based on pollutant load removal and cost considerations; and the computation of final design, survey, and construction costs for priority concept planning.
